13th February 2001

The new fare structure announced last week by online travel company Webjet.com.au is delivering bargains to consumers.

A survey conducted on Monday 12th February revealed that Webjet fares were consistently lower than both its major online competitor and the biggest 'bricks and mortar' travel chain.

Flying Qantas, Webjet was around $40 to $90 cheaper than its major online competitor (Travel.com) on flights to New York, Los Angeles, Paris and London and $66 to $86 cheaper than the best fares available from mainstream discounter Flight Centre.

When fares were selected from the cheapest international carrier, Webjet still won on all these routes by margins of $38-$49 over Travel.com and $66 to $72 over Flight Centre.

The savings on the competitive Singapore route were smaller, but still in the range of $17-$34.

(All international fares are calculated inclusive of credit card charges.)

Even on Australian domestic fares Webjet was cheaper, with the price advantage ranging from just under $5 on the competitive Sydney/Melbourne route, to $16 for Melbourne/Cairns return flights.

Webjet's Managing Director, David Clarke, said "any consumer who still doubted that Webjet's Hot Deals, when booked using the new DIY Internet booking service, offered Australia's cheapest airfares should make the comparison themselves by checking both websites ø Webjet.com.au and Travel.com.au. These would show Webjet not only consistently cheaper under its new "Book Yourself' Internet fare scheme, but cheaper again than the fares advertised daily by Flight Centre'.
